NASWNC has 5 Full-time and 2 Part-time staff members available to assist our membership.

While we advocate for all social workers and the profession, please note that if you are not a member, our time is limited to answer most questions or assist you, as our services are a membership benefit.

Kathy Boyd MSW, ACSW, CMSW - Executive Director

Kathy has an MSW from West Virginia University and a certificate in Association Management from Duke University. Kathy was selected as the National NASW Chapter Director of the Year in 2000. Prior to her work with NASW-NC, Kathy spent 6 years with Johnston County Mental Health Center in Smithfield, NC where she worked as the Consultation and Education Coordinator.

Erin L. (Cashwell) Timmermans, MPA - Associate Executive Director

Erin holds a Masters in Public Administration, and a BA in Psychology and Leadership Studies. Her professional focus extends to technology and social media, process and procedure and office functioning. Erin's position at NASW-NC requires professional knowledge and experience of non-profit, membership driven operations and management: leadership and the ability to provide individual motivation; implementation of policies and programs including but not limited to technology, staff procedures; to allocate resources consistent with the budget and mission; to provide a knowledgeable and welcoming public image; to exhibit knowledge of Social Work, Advocacy and Legislation and to communicate such effectively to our membership as well as to be proficient in small office communication and clerical procedures. Erin has worked in the non-profit arena since 2007 holding multiple office management roles and assisting in creating programs, maintaining fiscally sound organizations and focusing on training and development for staff members. Aside from running the operations of NASWNC, she has developed a non-social work internship program, and created a volunteer management program for the organization that provides 10-15 hours of assistance per month. Hope Murdock - Director of Professional Development

Hope Murdock received her BA in Spanish from Meredith College in 1997. Hope brings to the Association experience in coordinating continuing education activities for professionals.  Before signing on with NASW-NC, in 2008, Hope worked as Training Coordinator for the North Carolina Association of Rehabilitation Facilities and later as a Medical Conference Manager for the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .  In her current role, Hope develops and implements programs that strengthen the quality of CE options for Social Workers in NC.  Hope also directs all aspects of conference management for the association.

Kay Paksoy, BSW - Director of Advocacy, Policy and Legislation

Kay earned her BSW from Campbell University. During her time in school, Kay worked with local youth assigned to community service through the Governor’s One on One Program. She worked with program development and advertisement for the agency and did site visits for the youth to help strengthen their personal lives. Kay  traveled to South Africa over two winter breaks to the Lotus Home in Mabopane to work with 200 abandoned children and young adults. In 2008, Kay studied abroad in London, England and was introduced to the world of advocacy. Kay spent two months in a youth and women’s healthcare agency working with the Press Department to develop creative advocacy tools for international issues that affect young teenagers and was privileged to present her work at the Houses of Parliament. Kay worked with NASW-NC as an intern during her senior year of college and then as an Advocacy Associate. After completing college, Kay worked for the Methodist Home for Children in a level 2 residential group home and continues to help with the youth in the home. When Kay is not advocating or working with youth, she can be found running and cycling. On the occasions where more time is left in the day, Kay will pick up a book or plan her next overseas adventure.

Valerie Arendt, MSW, MPP - Director of Membership Marketing & Communication

Before moving to North Carolina from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Valerie obtained her Master of Social Work and Public Policy degrees from the University of Minnesota.  Valerie’s social work experience includes a focus on refugee and immigrant families, early childhood education, women and youth education, affordable housing, and nonprofit management.    Read More about Valerie here
